The Timber Atelier premise
Furniture should not expire.
We do not manufacture. We make one commission at a time—in solid timber, with joinery that earns its place and finishes that let the grain speak.
No catalogue. No repeats. The result is a piece that belongs to its room, its material and the person who asked for it.

Southern Africa
Warm, open grain that deepens to amber-brown.
Beautifully workable and naturally composed, kiaat is at home in dining tables, doors and pieces made for coastal living. Best for: tables, doors, outdoor pieces.

Yellowwood
South Africa · Reclaimed & licensed stock
Pale gold, fine and quietly luminous.
The timber of Cape heirlooms has a calm, refined figure. We use reclaimed and licensed stock only. Best for: heirloom tables, panelling, restoration.

Imbuia
The KwaZulu-Natal favourite
Smoky chocolate tones with expressive figure.
A classic of Natal furniture-making, rich without becoming loud and exceptionally suited to rooms with presence. Best for: boardroom tables, studies, statement pieces.

French oak
Europe
Honest, structural and endlessly versatile.
French oak takes texture, fuming and liming beautifully while retaining a clear architectural grain. Best for: doors, panelling, framed construction.

Walnut, rosewood, iroko & ash
Selected for the commission
A wider palette for colour, curve and climate.
From black walnut’s quiet depth to iroko’s coastal resilience and ash’s ability to bend, the material follows the work—not fashion. We also mill meaningful client-supplied trees where the timber is suitable.
Species are sourced with their paperwork in order—licensed, plantation-grown or reclaimed. Availability changes, as it should with a natural material.

From first line to final placement.
You remain close to the work. The drawings are clear, the quotation is fixed, and the piece is photographed as it grows.

We meet at the atelier or your site and talk about the room, the use and the life the piece will live.

Scaled drawings, a fixed quotation and a walk through the available timber to choose your boards.
The build
One bench, one maker and regular progress photographs. You are welcome to visit mid-build.
Delivery & placement
We deliver, place and finish on site, then return after a season to check how it has settled.

Minutes from Ballito’s beaches, the atelier is part bench room, part timber store and part drawing office. Most commissions begin with coffee here and a conversation over the boards.
We take a limited number of projects so each one receives the drawing time, bench time and finishing time it deserves.
